100% Sagrantino di Montefalco - special selection from only one vineyard
It is a selection of Sagrantino grape that come from the eponymous vineyard - Chiusa di Pannone (2.70 hectares). Planted in 1995. Altitude of 400 m a.s.l. Southern exposure with rows following the slopes. Planting density of 2.50 meters x 0.80 meters (5.000 vines/hectare). Terrain of Pleistocene origin, calcareous clay, rich in gravel and fluvio-lacustrine conglomerates.
The Harvest in second or third week of October, grapes are hand-picked.
Wine making: vinification using gravity feed thanks to the two levels of the cellar. Fermentation in contact with the skins for 3 or 4 weeks at a maximum temperature of 28°C. Malolactic fermentation takes place in wood.
Ageing: in lightly toasted 500 L barrels for 6 months then in 25 hL oak barrels for 24 months; The wine settles in glass lined cement vats for 6 months; final ageing in the bottle for 2 years. The wine isn’t stabilised nor filtered.
Tasting notes: intense ruby red in colour. A rich and powerful, ethereal and very complex nose. Typically characterised by notes of fruit and aromatic herbs, where citrus features, cherry, berry, mint and oregano. On the palate this wine is very structured, with firm and persistent tannins.
A wine that is best expressed with a long bottle ageing.
Best period for drinking: Sagrantino generally reaches full maturity after 10 - 15 years from the harvest and is able to bottle age for more than 30 years.
